A fashion shoot isn’t something I do a lot of, as I’m primarily a commercial  photographer.

But they are heaps of fun and very creative. Normally I’m shooting trucks, infrastructure or business portraits.

Gemma Scott is an old friend an amazing international model based in Shanghai. We first met in Mackay as she was embarking upon  her very successful modeling career.

So Gemma calls me to say she’ll be in Brisbane and suggested we do a shoot together.

Great, would love to. Around the same time, an amazing fashion designer, Jason Chetcuti,  got in touch looking for some images we’d taken previously for a book he is putting together.

It was the perfect alignment – Gemma to get some outfits from Jason for a shoot in Brisbane. Linda Jordan volunteered her awesome hair & makeup skills, whilst Jordan Voss also did hair (and supplied the amazing dog). My buddy and fellow photographer Matt Paul also assisted on this one.

Next was location. I’d originally pictured a grand old ballroom, crumbling and in disrepair.

Turns out that doesn’t exist in Brisbane, so we choose the woolshed in Tenneriffe. It’s a great location and worked perfectly. Along with some props we were ready to go.

Gemma is a joy to work with and a consummate professional.

If you have never shot with a professional model before, it’s well worth reaching out to someone for the experience. A lot of models will be open to doing this to expand their portfolio. This is exactly what we were doing in this shoot. Gemma added to her portfolio, Chetcuti received promotional images and I had a whole lot of fun with the shoot.

We had three main areas to work in, the first of which was near the river.

We didn’t have any props for this shot, but as chance would have it, Jordan had brought his beautiful dog along. A perfect compliment to Gemma in her outfit. It certainly garnered some interest from the joggers and walkers that morning.

The next location was behind the woolsheds with a focus on red, and some big ass balloons.

This was our headliner outfit and hero shot, and I think we nailed it. Let me know in the comments if you agree. I had scouted the location the day before and knew the red door would be great for this shot.

Finally, we went inside the woolsheds for some extra/bonus shots.

Turns out I really love some of these. Especially the ones just outside the elevators. This is a great reminder to be open to what presents during the course of a shoot. You just never know what could work well until you are on site, with everyone ready to go.

All in all the shoot came together with a real sense of ease and flow. Big thanks to everyone involved, we couldn’t have done it without each and every one of you. I had a blast and love the shots. We’ll have to do it again sometime.
