DEAN WHITLING

PHOTOGRAPHER | VIDEOGRAPHER | DIRECTOR OF ALL IS LIGHT

I love the connections and interactions I have with people in this business and I cherish the creativity and the expression inherent in creating visual content such as photos and videos. I also love having the ability to craft something for a client that they truly value and then use far and wide in their businesses.

Things you should know about me are that I am committed to producing the best work I possibly can. I am dedicated to bringing integrity to that work, both when out shooting or back in the office editing. To the best of my ability, I allow people space to be who they are, and never bring in judgement, control or expectations. This is super important when photographing or videoing someone. That process is one of surrender and trust. I will guide, support and encourage you, but I will never impose. Most of all I bring a sense of fun and flow when we work together. Something I’ve always said is “enjoy the process, and the results will take care of themselves”. Additionally, “Don’t take it too seriously.” We’re here to enjoy and enrich one another. Have a sense of fun and playfulness about what we’re doing, and that will come across loud and clear in the photos or video.

Working with me you’ll get transparency, care, honesty, fun, integrity, consistency, reliability and dedication. You’ll also get one heck of a photographer and filmmaker. I’m not perfect and never will be, but this is what I offer when we embark upon the creative journey together.

IN MY SPARE TIME …

I love playing the guitar, but I also buy and sell them as a side-hobby. I’ll do them up, get them playing well, and then see them go to new homes. As a guitar nerd, I get the satisfaction of someone enjoying their new instrument, whilst also getting to play with heaps of different toys guitars myself. Then every now and again one comes along that doesn’t go anywhere.

I don’t live my life 9-5, Monday to Friday, then hang out for the weekend. Work is something I do as an integral part of my life and I respond as needed. I am very dedicated to this. I do take time out when needed and, as best I can, I make sure there is balance in life. There really isn’t such a thing as a week, a month, a year. In truth, there is only one day that repeats over and over again. The sun comes up, the sun goes down. Each day is actually a new opportunity to grow and evolve. To explore, go deeper and to love more. Each day is a gift and who doesn’t love unwrapping presents?

SOME THINGS I LOVE …

Dean Whitling photographer and videographer at All Is Light

01. TRAVELING

… and exploring the world, both local and afar, with my wife Janine. We have such a great time doing this together whether it be to the other side of the world or just a quick swim down on the Gold Coast on a Sunday morning. We live, work and hang out so well, travelling is another way to be with one another as we share this journey of life together.

02. CATCH UPS

… and dinners with friends and family. I really love developing my relationships with those around me and those I love. Work is a huge part of my life, so I find connecting with people outside of that very important for balance. Nothing beats an intimate dinner and evolving conversations with loved ones; it nourishes the soul.

03. EVOLVING

… in life through self-reflection plus the reflections of others is something I really cherish. Everything about life is evolving. It’s happening all around us whether we like it or not. If we take an active part in it to really maximise what’s available – well that’s when real magic can happen. Nothing stands still in the universe. The universe is expanding at mind-boggling speeds. I do my best to keep up.

01. PLAYING GUITAR

and all things guitar related – I really am a guitar nerd! I love the expression available through music and the interconnectedness of head, hands and heart. There’s a mathematical and structured aspect to music but also a very intangible ‘feels’ component that makes it such a wonderful tool of expression. I’m drawn in equal measure to the precise mechanics of it, just as much as the intangible ‘feels’ part.
